The Lancaster Office of
Emergency Management said the first test of its emergency notification system a
few weeks ago yielded a 75 percent success rate.
The system, called Code Red by town officials, is an emergency
notification system capable of dialing up to 60,000 telephone numbers
an hour in order to notify residents of evacuations, hazardous chemical
situations, fires, floods and other disasters. Thousands of Lancaster
residents and businesses received calls from the system late last
month.
"In the event of an emergency, the Code Red alert system will
prove to be very helpful in getting our residents and businesses vital
information in a short period of time," said Robert MacPeek of the
Office of Emergency Management.
In an emergency, Code Red will call residents and businesses, and if
the number is busy, it will automatically call those numbers back a
second and third time if necessary.
"Keeping our residents informed of
potential disasters or hazards can save lives and let them know what
action might be required," MacPeek said.
