City update - 6 p.m. Saturday

10/22/2005

Hurricane Wilma continues to threaten Marco Island. Mandatory evacuation was effective at noon on Friday for Marco Island and other coastal areas. Evacuation should be completed by 8 a.m. Sunday morning. A curfew will be in effect Sunday and Monday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Storm surge models predict the water surrounding Marco Island may rise as high as 9 to 12 feet above tide, with wind speeds exceeding 100 mph. Marco Island properties and residents will be in imminent danger if the hurricane's predicted path and strength continue. Evacuation is the only reasonable course of action.

Code Red is an automated telephone message system that will be used during and after public emergencies. Our database consists of most listed home telephone numbers. If you would messages sent to your cell phone, business phone or other telephone, please log onto the City's Web site, click on Code Red, and follow the instructions. The City's Web site will also provide updated information as to the conditions and warnings.

By now, all outside furniture, trash receptacles, and other loose objects should be secured. Please turn off automatic sprinkler systems to assist in conserving valuable water. Be sure to have adequate supplies (non-perishable food and water, batteries, medicines etc.) to take with you as you evacuate.

The bridges to and from Marco Island will not be closed. However, citizens are cautioned that tropical and hurricane force winds are greater at higher altitudes. Therefore, the bridges may be dangerous to cross. Water, electrical and cell phone service will likely be disrupted.

Residents should stay tuned to local news media for the latest information. Residents seeking shelter information should contact the Collier County Emergency Hotline at 774-8444.

For citizens requiring transportation, the Collier County bus service will run its regular route Sunday and will take people to emergency shelters. Shelters should be considers a refuge of last resort.
