Boca Raton buys use of alert technology
The City of Boca Raton has
named Ormond Beach-based Emergency Communications Network part of its emergency
preparedness network, the company said.
"Recent emergencies required Boca Raton to contact residents to notify
them of a boil water alert," ECN explained. " But the system Boca
Raton had been using would have taken three days to reach residents. ECN's CodeRED
system can make over 60,000 phone calls in one hour."
The company's CodeRED is a patented, Internet-based message delivery system
that makes recorded phone calls. ECN said it developed the system to provide
immediate access to time-sensitive information, including boil water alerts,
weather emergencies, local criminal activity and homeland security issues.
The company said Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit agency A Child is Missing uses
the CodeRED calling system to help find missing children and seniors and to
issue sexual predator alerts.
George Brown, assistant city manager of Boca Raton, said the city realized it
needed to be able to reach its residents and customers with timely information
as quickly as possible.
"The CodeRED system is fast and accurate down to the street address, so
we know we'll be able to deliver alerts about emergency situations in as timely
a manner as possible," he said.
Neither the city nor the company gave a dollar value to their deal or said for
how long Boca Raton has contracted to use the CodeRED system.
